Application via Backpack Sprayer

Step 1

Prepare Equipment and Fertiliser

  1. Gather Equipment: Collect the necessary equipment: a backpack sprayer, appropriate fertiliser suitable for your plants, measuring tools, protective gear (gloves, goggles), and clean water for mixing.
  2. Select Suitable Fertilizer: Choose a water-soluble fertiliser suitable for your plant type and growth stage. Read the manufacturer’s instructions regarding mixing ratios.

Step 2

Prepare Fertiliser Solution

  1. Measure Fertiliser: Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines to measure the correct amount of fertiliser.

  2. Mix with Water: Fill the backpack sprayer with the appropriate amount of clean water. Add the measured fertiliser gradually, stirring or agitating the solution to dissolve it completely. Ensure proper dissolution to prevent clogging the sprayer.

Step 3

Prepare the Sprayer

  1. Fill the Sprayer: Pour the prepared fertiliser solution into the backpack sprayer tank, ensuring it does not exceed the recommended fill level.

  2. Secure Lid and Pump: Securely close the sprayer lid and ensure all connections are tight. Pump the sprayer to pressurise it according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step 4

Apply Fertiliser

  1. Adjust Nozzle Settings: Select an appropriate nozzle setting on the sprayer for the desired spray pattern (fan, cone, stream, etc.) and adjust the pressure if applicable.

  2. Spray Technique: Hold the sprayer wand comfortably and at an appropriate height above the plants. Begin spraying, moving in a steady and even manner to ensure uniform coverage.

  3. Avoid Overlapping and Runoff: Pay attention to prevent overlapping coverage, which may cause over-fertilisation. Avoid excessive runoff to minimise waste and environmental impact.

  4. Cover Plants Evenly: Ensure thorough coverage of the plants with the fertiliser solution, but avoid excessive saturation that might harm the plants.

Step 5

Clean Up and Maintenance

  1. Rinse Sprayer: After application, rinse the sprayer tank, nozzle, and wand thoroughly with clean water to remove any remaining fertilizer solution.
  2. Flush System: To prevent clogs, flush the sprayer system with clean water and clean the filter or nozzle components if needed.
  3. Store Properly: Store the backpack sprayer in a dry and safe place, following manufacturer recommendations to maintain its longevity.

Always adhere to safety precautions and the specific instructions provided by the backpack sprayer manufacturer and the fertiliser product label to ensure proper and safe application. Adjustments to application rates and methods might be necessary based on plant needs and environmental conditions.
